How to Draw the Ball

What is the Draw?

You might notice next time you watch the pros on TV. The ball starts its flight going off to the right (for those rightys). The draw starts on this path and then comes back to the middle. When done properly this shot gives you some extra distance not only on the flight but on the roll as well. This is due to the spin put on the ball.

Too much spin and the ball will hook or just shoot right back into the ground, not too far in front of you.

So what's the secret? First you want to be aiming your ball to the right so that it starts down the right path. Next, your club face needs to be closing as you come through the ball. This will give it the right to left spin that it needs to curve.

Easier said than done?

One big secret in this move is your grip. By having a stronger grip, not gripping the club tighter, you will close the face of the club naturally. A stronger grip means that you have your thumbs to the right of center. A weaker grip has the thumbs left of center. A weaker grip tends to leave the club face open at impact, causing slices and pushing the ball to the right.

Create a stronger grip by rotating your hands so that you can see two to three knuckles across your forward hand. If you find your ball hooking, then your grip is too strong. To correct this, bring your hands more toward the middle. This grip is going to be different for different people. Find the right grip for you through practice. Preferably on the practice facility and not on the course.

How do I know I'm successful?

If youv'e hit the ball correctly, you will notice a little bit of curve from right to left for the right handers and left to right for the leftys. The ball will also come back to the middle of the fairway and roll for quite a way. Master this shot and you will be out driving most golfers out there.
