Long & Short Irons
The Long & The Short Of It
What is the difference between long irons and short irons?
Long irons are the ones you hit when you need to ball to travel 100 yards or more. The short irons
are for ranges within 100 yards. Generally.
I say generally, because I have heard the question many times from new golfers. "How far does my 7 iron go?"
How far you hit a 7 iron is probably different than how far anyone else will hit the same 7 iron. It all
depends on you. There are too many variables to be able to tell how far anyone might hit any given club.
Approaching the Green
One great use for the irons is, approaching the green or the "approach shot". This is a very important shot and can
make or break the score on each hole. Do not take this shot lightly.
Chipping
Another great use for the 9,7 and 5 irons is chipping. Some may think that the pitching wedge is the only thing to
use around the green. This is not the case. The irons have less loft which means you get a little bit of air and
more roll. In chipping you want to keep the ball low for more control.
Get Some Height
When you need to get over trees, a lofted iron will do the trick. Make sure you come down on the ball forcing it in the air. To do this you need to get the leading edge of the club underneath the ball. Hitting the ball with
the blade of the club will send in low, hopefully under the tree. However, the blade method is very unpredictable.
