Wedges

Those Amazing Wedges

Over the past 50 or 60 years there have been incredible advances in golf technology. Probably one of the biggest to impact the game are wedges. The pitching wedge has been around for a very long time, however it was not a very good club for getting out of the sand around the green. So a more lofted wedge was born, intro the sand wedge. Not only was this club more lofted, but the trailing edge of the club was moved up a bit so there was no drag through the sand.

Next on the scene was the lob wedge. An even more lofted club than even the sand wedge. This was a great utility club around the green and in really tall grass. It helps to pop the ball almost straight up, getting it out of tall grass and over immediate hazards.

The other wedge is in between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge. It's called the gap wedge and is used for those short range shots where a pitching wedge is just too much. The problem with this wedge is that it putss too many clubs in your bag and it doesn't come into play too often.

Uses for wedges

There are some great uses for the wedges that we will get into in more detail in the Short Game. But, typically the pitching wedge and sand wedge can be used for shots inside of 100 yards and their goal is to get the ball on the green as close to the pin as possible.

Pitching, chipping, and green side bunkers are the most typical uses of these wedges. A pitch shot has mostly air and a little bit of roll. The chip has a little bit of air and more roll than the pitch. If you want to see how to make these shots please visit the Short Game page.

Some of the most fun I've had golfing is in the short game. I love being able to land the ball on the green from a short distance and have it roll right near the cup. The reaction I get from other golfers makes it all worth while. However, it usually means that I have a make it or break it putt for par. I would much rather, from a score stand point, have a great approach shot (see Approach Shot)

The green side bunker can be a terror to most golfers. But when you understand how this shot works and can get a few of them under your belt, they are not so terrifying. Although, landing on the green is preferable.

If you need a more lofted wedge, but don't have one in your bag, you can open the face of the club just a bit and you can go from a sand wedge to a lob wedge for free
